South Florida high school baseball put two players in the first round of the 2026 MLB Draft on Saturday, as Gulliver Prep shortstop Jacob Lombard went No. 14 to the Miami Marlins and Stoneman Douglas left-hander Gio Rojas landed at No. 16 with the Texas Rangers.

Lombard, the 18-year-old Pinecrest product who helped Gulliver Prep's soccer team win state titles in 2023 and 2024 before turning his full attention to baseball, was MLB Pipeline's No. 5 overall prospect. His slide to No. 14 was one of the night's biggest surprises, according to Bleacher Report, which gave the Marlins an A grade for the pick.

"I'm thinking so far ahead in terms of a possibility of playing with my brother, hitting a home run and rounding second and smiling at him while he's at shortstop," Lombard told MLB.com. His older brother, George Jr., is ranked the Yankees' top prospect by MLB Pipeline.

Rojas made history of his own. He became the first Stoneman Douglas player selected in the first round of the MLB Draft, according to the Miami Herald, and the first South Florida high school pitcher taken in the first round since Plantation American Heritage's Brandon Barriera went No. 23 to the Blue Jays in 2022.

The numbers back up the hype. Over his junior and senior seasons, Rojas posted a 24-1 record with a 0.66 ERA and 243 strikeouts against just 33 walks in 137 innings, the Miami Herald reported. Stoneman Douglas won state titles in each of Rojas' three varsity seasons, extending the program's streak to six consecutive championships, per the Herald.

CBS Sports analyst Mike Axisa called Rojas "the best high school pitcher in the draft class," adding that getting him in the back half of the first round was "a huge win for Texas." MLB Pipeline noted his fastball touches 98 mph with outstanding riding life, paired with a sweeping slider described as a true out pitch.

The No. 16 pick carries a bonus slot value of $5.05 million. Rojas had been committed to the University of Miami. Whether he signs with Texas or honors that commitment has not been announced.

Stoneman Douglas head coach Todd Fitz-Gerald told the Miami Herald he expects Rojas to reach the majors in roughly two and a half years. The program has produced 12 draft picks since 2016. Its all-time alumni include Anthony Rizzo and Jesus Luzardo.

Both Rojas and Lombard were teammates on Team USA's gold-medal squad at the 2025 WBSC U-18 World Cup. Lombard was also committed to the University of Miami before the draft.

Draft Day 2, covering rounds five through 20, continues Sunday, streaming on MLB.com and MLB.TV starting at 11:30 a.m. ET.
