Record 75 entries mark 67th Key Biscayne parade
A patriotic SuperMix concrete mixer, a DJ Volkswagen bus and 73 other entries rolled down Crandon Boulevard on the Fourth of July, giving Key Biscayne's 67th annual parade the largest field in its history, according to the Islander News.
Judges spend two hours evaluating record field
The record 75 entries kept judges Norie Del Valle, Ana Isabel Hume and Curt Obront evaluating floats, decorated golf carts, bicycles and marching groups for more than two hours. Emcees Austin Tellam and Tim Stinkey narrated the procession for crowds lining the boulevard despite a National Weather Service heat advisory, with the heat index reaching 103 degrees.
Parade lands on nation's 250th anniversary
This year's parade coincided with the nation's 250th anniversary of independence. Organizers brand the event "The Best Lil' Hometown Parade in South Florida," and the turnout backed up the claim.
Judges name winners in six categories
Judges awarded prizes in six categories:
- Best Decorated Golf Cart: Tamares Family
- Best Decorated Bike: Key Biscayne American Legion
- Most Patriotic: The Baltimore All-Stars Marching Band
- Most Beautiful: SuperMix Concrete truck
- Most Original: Key Biscayne Yacht Club
- Best Homemade Entry: Jankanoos
Concrete truck takes an unlikely beauty prize
A concrete mixer winning a beauty prize may sound unlikely, but the SuperMix truck's red-white-and-blue decorations earned it the Most Beautiful nod. The Key Biscayne Yacht Club's float took Most Original.
