Residents heading to Crandon Park, Peacock Park or CocoWalk Plaza on Tuesday should plan around dangerous heat. The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory for Key Biscayne and all of Miami-Dade County, warning that the heat index could reach 106 degrees between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m.
It's the second advisory to hit the island in four days. A similar warning covered Key Biscayne on July 4, when thousands gathered for the 67th annual Fourth of July Parade.
"The feels-like temperature will be the big headline," CBS News Miami meteorologist Shane Hinton said. "We are gearing up for another steamy day."
The air temperature is forecast to top 90 degrees Tuesday, with a 50% chance of rain offering only brief relief. The overnight low is forecast at 82.
Hinton said additional advisories are possible later in the week, though none has been issued beyond Tuesday.
Older Adults, Children and Outdoor Workers Face Greatest Risk
Miami-Dade County identifies older adults 65 and over, young children, people with chronic health conditions, outdoor workers, athletes, pregnant people and pets as the most vulnerable. Extreme heat causes more than 30 deaths and hundreds of hospitalizations in Miami-Dade every year, according to county estimates.
Fire Rescue Urges Hydration and Shade Breaks
Key Biscayne Fire Rescue Deputy Chief Daniel Feeney advised residents to stay hydrated, limit alcohol, take frequent shade breaks, wear lightweight and light-colored clothing, and check on children, older adults and pets. He stressed that no one should leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle, even briefly.
The National Weather Service recommends limiting strenuous outdoor activities to early morning or evening hours.
Residents looking for air-conditioned relief can find cooling centers through miami.gov/coolingcenters or by calling 311.
