Ransom Everglades cross country and track and field coach Mike Becker will enter the Florida International University Athletics Hall of Fame in November, one of six former Panthers honored in the university's 2026 induction class.
FIU will hold the ceremonies Nov. 6-7 during Homecoming weekend on campus, according to FIU's announcement. The Nov. 6 induction banquet in the Graham Center Ballroom begins with a cocktail hour at 6 p.m., followed by the formal program at 7 p.m. The class will then be recognized at FIU's football game against Missouri State at 4 p.m. Nov. 7.
Becker coached FIU's cross country and track and field programs from 1987 to 2006 and served as an associate athletic director. He guided more than 15 Division I and II All-Americans and four Olympians, according to FIU Athletics. His teams won seven conference championships, and he earned seven Coach of the Year awards in 11 seasons as head coach.
Among the athletes Becker coached at FIU was Tayna Lawrence, who went on to win one gold and two silver Olympic medals in the 2000 and 2004 Games, according to FIU.
FIU Athletics Director Scott Carr said the group represents "our third class of inductees" and includes athletes from "three programs not currently in our Hall of Fame."
After leaving FIU, Becker continued coaching at Ransom Everglades School in Coconut Grove, where he also teaches math. As of October 2023, his Raiders track and field teams had won 18 consecutive district titles, excluding the COVID-shortened 2020 season, according to Ransom Everglades. In April, RE athletes won 11 events at the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) 2A District 15 Championships under Becker's direction.
At his Oct. 12, 2023, induction into Ransom Everglades' Athletic Hall of Fame, Becker said, "I only know how to coach one way … All day, all night, all in."
FIU also said Becker released a book, "Coaching My Own Way," in which he discusses his career and the athletes he mentored.
The other 2026 inductees are Carlos Arroyo (men's basketball), Johanna Gustafsdottir (swimming), Albert Lorenzo (sports contributor), Michele O'Brien (women's soccer) and Nick Turnbull (football). The Hall of Fame was created in 2005, with its inaugural class inducted in November 2006.
Banquet tickets are available through FIUTickets.com, with a Nov. 4 deadline. Individual seats cost $125 and tables of eight are $800.
