Claire London has reversed her decision to leave the Key Biscayne Village Council race and says she remains a candidate in the Nov. 3 election.

London confirmed the change Monday, Oct. 26, telling the Key Biscayne Independent that friends had already voted for her and she did not want their ballots to be wasted.

She had announced Sept. 25 that she was stepping aside to care for her husband, term-limited Council member Ed London. However, she never submitted formal withdrawal paperwork, the Independent reported.

A change in plans

On Oct. 20, the Independent reported that the Miami-Dade Elections Department and village clerk had not received a formal withdrawal request. Elections spokesman Juan Mendieta told the outlet that people who had already voted could not change their votes.

In the Oct. 26 interview, London said she would probably serve if she finished among the top three, out of respect for those who voted for her. She had skipped candidate debates and public forums, according to the report.

Five candidates, three seats

The council field includes Claire Amerena London, Luis F. “Lucho” de la Cruz, Oscar Sardiñas, Silvia P. Tarafa and Fernando Vazquez. Voters may choose up to three candidates.

Ed London’s current council term ends in 2026, according to the village’s council directory. His wife’s decision puts her back in contention for one of the three available seats.

Where to vote

Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3. The village’s election information page lists voting hours of 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Key Biscayne Community Center, 10 Village Green Way, and links to the official sample ballot.
