Volunteers can learn to survey and tag nesting horseshoe crabs at Crandon Park on Sunday, Sept. 13, the first in a string of free and low-cost events across Key Biscayne running through Sept. 19.
The Florida Horseshoe Crab Watch training runs from 9 a.m. to noon at 6767 Crandon Blvd., according to the Islander News community calendar. The statewide program, launched in 2015 by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) and the University of Florida, trains residents to collect data on horseshoe crab nesting activity using a standardized scientific protocol, according to FWC. Miami-Dade County beaches are among the program's active sampling areas.
September falls within the crabs' fall nesting season, which runs from late August through October, according to a peer-reviewed study in the journal Citizen Science: Theory and Practice. The training is open to anyone 16 and older and does not require a commitment to future surveys. Registration is required.
Free tutoring at the police station
Students can get free homework help every Sunday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Key Biscayne Police Station, 88 W. McIntyre St. The sessions are led by high school tutors. No registration is required.
Disability Advisory Board meets Monday
The Key Biscayne Village Disability Advisory Board meets Monday, Sept. 14, at 6 p.m. at 88 W. McIntyre St. The board advises the Village of Key Biscayne on accessibility initiatives.
The meeting is open to the public.
Moon night at Bill Baggs on Sept. 19
International Observe the Moon Night takes place Saturday, Sept. 19, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park, 1200 S. Crandon Blvd. The free event brings together several Key Biscayne partner organizations, according to the Key Biscayne Independent, and features moon watching, music, poetry, five-minute moon stories, community displays and sunset lighthouse tours. Nimbuya Juicy Lucy Burgers will be available for purchase. Registration is required.

Key Biscayne resident and author María Justina Poblet Schilling de Floreani presents "Colores/Colors," a bilingual poetry reading accompanied by Renzo de Castillo, on Thursday, Sept. 17, at noon at the Key Biscayne Community Center (KBCC). Free for members; $10 for non-members.
Teens ages 11–18 can sign up for a KBCC field trip to Dezerland Action Park Miami on Friday, Sept. 18, at 7 p.m. The cost is $20, and registration is limited to 20 spots. Sign-up closes Thursday, Sept. 17.
