acob Lombard signed with the Miami Marlins on Thursday, locking in a $5 million signing bonus and beginning his professional career five miles from where he grew up.
The 18-year-old shortstop from Gulliver Preparatory School in Pinecrest was selected 14th overall in the 2026 MLB Draft on Saturday. Five days later, the Marlins introduced him at loanDepot Park before the big-league club departed for Milwaukee.
For South Florida sports fans, the local angle runs deep. Lombard is the highest draft pick out of Miami-Dade County since Manny Machado went third overall to Baltimore in 2010, according to USA Today. He's also a two-sport star: In three varsity soccer seasons at Gulliver, Lombard helped the Raiders go 60-7-5 and win back-to-back state championships in 2023 and 2024.
His senior baseball season was dominant. Lombard batted .477 with a .607 on-base percentage and .864 slugging percentage, with 10 home runs, 25 RBIs and 14 stolen bases, according to Fish On First.
Baseball runs in the family. Lombard is the third member of his family drafted in the second round or higher. His father, George Lombard Sr., was a second-round pick by the Atlanta Braves in 1994 and played six MLB seasons during a professional career that spanned more than two decades; he's now the Detroit Tigers' bench coach. His brother, George Lombard Jr., was a first-round pick by the New York Yankees in 2023 and is ranked the team's No. 1 prospect.
"I think growing up and having a family in the game prepares me," Lombard said at his signing. "I get to talk to my brother about what he sees on a daily basis in the minor leagues and, of course, conversations with my dad, who had a 16-year career and is still around the game."
Marlins President of Baseball Operations Peter Bendix said the organization plans to challenge Lombard immediately. Marlins Vice President Frankie Piliere told reporters the front office wasn't sure Lombard would be available until the night before the draft.
MLB Pipeline grades Lombard with a 60 overall future value and projects him as a potential 30-homer, 30-steal player at 6-foot-3, 195 pounds. Ranked the No. 5 prospect in the draft class, his slide to No. 14 surprised scouts, with swing-and-miss tendencies cited as the primary concern.
Lombard had committed to the University of Miami in October 2025 but chose to turn pro. His $5 million bonus, reported by Francys Romero, is roughly $445,000 under the slot value of $5,444,900 for the 14th pick.
