Coconut Grove's main commercial corridors are getting new streetscape lighting, planters and landscaping, the neighborhood's business district announced.
The Coconut Grove Business Improvement District said in an Oct. 20 post by Bill Kress that crews are installing year-round decorative lighting along Commodore Plaza, Main Highway and parts of Grand Avenue and Fuller Street. The BID said work is moving ahead to have the lighting in place for the holiday season and that it will stay lit well into the new year.
The project also includes new barricades at both ends of Fuller Street, along with 3-by-10 planters. The BID did not specify the units for those planter dimensions.
Separately, crews plan to revitalize Commodore Plaza's flower beds by planting Green Island Ficus. The BID described the compact shrub as a favorite in South Florida streetscapes because it tolerates heat, salt air and drought while holding a tidy shape year-round.
The district's operations team is also stepping up graffiti removal across the Grove. The BID said its crews use a product called Elephant Snot, a thick green gel that clings to brick, stone, stucco and pavers and dissolves spray-paint tags so they can be rinsed away. The BID described the product as biodegradable and environmentally safe, though no independent certification was cited.
The BID did not release a completion timeline or budget for the combined streetscape work.
