Two Miami-Dade County Public Schools construction projects worth a combined $35.8 million will bring a new main building to the Marine Academy of Science and Technology (MAST) @ FIU and a three-story classroom building to Coconut Grove Elementary. Both projects fall within District 6, represented by School Board Chair Mari Tere Rojas. The district covers Key Biscayne, Coconut Grove, Coral Gables and South Miami.

The district held a groundbreaking ceremony Monday, July 20, for a $20.6 million building at MAST @ FIU, Biscayne Bay Campus. The School Board awarded the construction contract to KAST Construction Company, Florida LLC. District materials describe the project as both a "new addition" and the "campus's new main building"; the district has not clarified the full scope.

MAST serves as a magnet high school drawing students from Key Biscayne and surrounding communities.

The Key Biscayne Village Council separately approved a $2.4 million joint-use agreement with Miami-Dade County for MAST field upgrades at its Wednesday, June 24, meeting, according to the Islander News. That project is distinct from the $20.6 million main building.

On Wednesday, May 13, the School Board commissioned architectural firm Gurri Matute, P.A. to design the $15.2 million three-story classroom building at Coconut Grove Elementary.
