Ransom Everglades freshman Axel Monssoh birdied his final hole Tuesday, Oct. 6, finishing with a 1-under-par 71 to help the Raiders capture their first Archbishop McCarthy Maverick Invitational boys golf championship.
The Coconut Grove school's team shot a 2-over-par 290 at Eagle Trace Golf Club in Coral Springs, defeating runner-up Columbus by five strokes in a 17-team field, the Miami Herald reported.
The tournament featured teams from Florida High School Athletic Association classes 1A, 2A and 3A. Ransom Everglades had finished second at the event in 2022 and 2024 before breaking through this year.
Freshman leads four Raiders into top seven
Monssoh's 71 was the only under-par round in the tournament, earning him individual medalist honors. He became the third Ransom Everglades golfer to win the individual title, joining Cole Durham in 2025 and Jake Beber-Frankel in 2019.
Sophomore Pablo Muñoz Montes tied for second with Columbus golfer Eduardo Perez at even-par 72.
Zachary Fischer finished fourth with a 1-over 73, while Durham, the defending individual champion, placed seventh with a 2-over 74.
All four Ransom Everglades golfers finished among the top seven, giving the Raiders a combined score of 290.
Columbus finished second at 295, followed by Miami Country Day at 309.
Raiders build momentum toward postseason
The championship followed several close finishes against some of South Florida's leading high school golf programs.
Ransom Everglades opened its tournament season with a second-place finish at the Westminster Christian Invitational on Aug. 18, shooting 304 to Columbus' 301.
At the Palm League Championship in September, the Raiders shot a 1-under 283 to finish second behind Benjamin School of North Palm Beach.
Columbus again edged Ransom Everglades at the Miami-Dade County Youth Fair Golf Championship, winning 284-288.
The Maverick Invitational victory marked a breakthrough for a team that had repeatedly finished near the top of competitive tournament fields.
Ransom Everglades will begin its FHSAA Class 1A postseason at the district championship Monday, Oct. 26, at Crandon Golf Course.
The regional championship is scheduled for Nov. 2 at Miami Shores Country Club, followed by the state championship Nov. 17-18 at Mission Inn Resort & Club.
