St. Christopher's by-the-Sea Montessori School has opened its annual pumpkin patch, offering Key Biscayne families 11 varieties of pumpkins and gourds through Halloween.
Now in its ninth year, the patch features swan gourds, miniature pumpkins, white pumpkins and starfish-shaped gourds known as gizmos, according to Islander News. The pumpkins were grown on a North Carolina farm and transported to the island.
A custom-built pumpkin house provides a backdrop for family photos.
"It brings us joy to be able to convey the feeling of Autumn to Key Biscayne," said Eleanor Yee, the school's head.
Annual tradition brings families together
Christy Ponce de Leon, associate head of school and director of admissions, has organized the pumpkin patch since it began in 2017. The St. Christopher's by-the-Sea Parent Association helps operate the event, which brings students, families and neighbors together while supporting the school.
Students have embraced the seasonal tradition.
Seven-year-old Ines Olanow told Islander News she was excited about the oversized pumpkins and planned to decorate hers with funny faces and pink paint.
Vera Aswad, 9, described the patch as cozy and welcoming, comparing the atmosphere to being at home.
School honors four longtime educators
The pumpkin patch opening coincided with another celebration at St. Christopher's.
During Episcopal Schools Sunday Mass on Oct. 11, the school and St. Christopher's by-the-Sea Episcopal Church recognized four educators for their years of service.
Teacher Olga Pereira was honored for 40 years, while Marisol Garcia, Danice Galvan and Gloria Sanabria were recognized for 10 years each.
The Rev. Willie Allen-Faiella, the church's priest-in-charge, praised the educators for their dedication and hard work.
Scarecrow contest adds to fall festivities
Students and families are also creating scarecrows for the school's annual contest, according to events coordinator Martha Lucia Gonzalez.
The scarecrows will be displayed at the school and church, with students voting for their three favorites. Winners will receive medals and pumpkins.
The pumpkin patch is located at 95 Harbor Drive in Key Biscayne. Hours are 2 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Cash and Zelle are accepted.
The patch is scheduled to remain open through Oct. 31. For more information, call 305-361-5080 or visit the school's website.
