Key Biscayne Fire Rescue will join six other fire agencies at the 39th annual Children's Fire Safety Festival, which begins Tuesday, Oct. 13, in Miami Beach.

The three-day event runs through Thursday, Oct. 15, at the Miami Beach Convention Center, 1901 Convention Center Drive. Activities are scheduled from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. daily, with an opening ceremony at 9 a.m. Oct. 13, according to the event announcement.

The festival brings together firefighters and preselected Miami-Dade County students in first through third grades for hands-on lessons in fire prevention and emergency response.

Students practice fire safety skills

Children will rotate through five interactive learning stations covering home fire prevention, kitchen and bathroom safety, and how and when to call 911.

Students will also practice the "Stop, Drop and Roll" technique, which teaches children what to do if their clothing catches fire.

The Miami Burn Center at Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital is organizing the festival in collaboration with the Miami Beach Fire Department.

"Teaching children about fire safety at a young age gives them skills that can stay with them for a lifetime," Miami Beach Fire Chief Digna Abello said in the announcement.

Seven fire agencies participate

Key Biscayne Fire Rescue will participate alongside Miami Beach Fire Department, Miami Fire Rescue, Coral Gables Fire Rescue, Hialeah Fire Rescue, Homestead Air Reserve Base Fire Rescue and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.

The festival follows National Fire Prevention Week, observed Oct. 4-10 this year. The annual campaign promotes fire prevention and safety education.

The event will take place in the Lincoln Ballroom on the convention center's first floor.
