The Monica Burguera Foundation is bringing two events to the Key Biscayne Yacht Club in August and October: a fishing tournament with a dock party on Saturday, Aug. 22, and a free state-certified boating safety course on Saturday, Oct. 10.

The Aug. 22 tournament will welcome anglers of all levels for a day of competition on the water. Spearfishing is permitted, with participants expected to follow all applicable regulations. After lines come in, a dock party with food, drinks and music follows at the yacht club. Proceeds support the foundation's boating safety education programs for children and adults.

On Saturday, Oct. 10, the foundation sponsors a free, full-day boating safety course at the same venue, 180 Harbor Drive. U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 65 instructors will teach the class from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The curriculum covers life jacket use, pre-departure vessel checks, speed limits, navigation rules, situational awareness and the dangers of mixing alcohol with boat operation.

The certification is required for any boater born after Jan. 1, 1988. Florida law requires those operators to hold a Boating Safety Education Identification Card, issued by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, before running a motorboat of 10 horsepower or more. The card is valid for life.

The foundation, organized locally by Natalie Estrella, runs a Boating Safety Lecture Series recognized as an official Village of Key Biscayne community program for the 2025–2026 season. The foundation described its work as an ongoing effort to educate boaters, encourage responsible behavior and make South Florida's waterways safer, according to the Islander News.
