Key Biscayne families have a new way to get kids outdoors through April 2027. The Tropical Audubon Society has launched a free birding series for young people ages 10 to 17, with two of eight scheduled stops on the island.

The 2026-27 Youth Field Trip series runs through next spring, as first reported by Miami's Community Newspapers. Each outing lasts two hours, starting at 8 a.m., and is open to all skill levels. A parent or guardian must attend.

The series already visited Crandon Park on Sunday, Sept. 27. The next Key Biscayne date is Saturday, April 10, 2027, at Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park, 1200 Crandon Blvd. The society said the spring outing targets warblers, vireos, buntings and other northbound migrants that pass through the park's coastal habitat. Park entrance fees and the Rickenbacker Causeway toll apply.

The next trip overall is Sunday, Oct. 18, at A.D. Barnes Park in Miami, where fall migration draws warblers, flycatchers and woodpeckers. Parking and admission are free.

Tropical Audubon Education Director Daniel "DJ" Mlodozeniec and Field Trip Coordinator Brian Rapoza lead every outing. The organization provides a limited number of loaner binoculars for adults and youth. Registration is required for each trip, and details are available at tropicalaudubon.org.

All trips are free unless otherwise noted and run rain or shine. The society stated that rainy days are sometimes the "birdiest" days, because rain pushes birds into lower, more visible perches in the tree canopy and draws insects closer to the ground, concentrating feeding activity where birders can spot it.
