A birthday celebration for journalist Bill Baggs comes to Cape Florida State Park on Wednesday, Sept. 30, with lighthouse tours and a new journalism award.

The Bill Baggs Birthday Bash runs from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the historic lighthouse grounds, 1200 Crandon Blvd. The evening includes a documentary screening, a holographic visit with Baggs and the unveiling of the Bill Baggs Fearless Journalism Award, according to the Islander News.

Biographer Amy Paige Condon will sign copies of her book. Admission is free for Friends of Cape Florida members. A $25 suggested donation is requested for non-members.

Baggs, the Miami journalist who championed civil rights and conservation, is the namesake of the state park at the island's southern tip.

Pardo hosts zoning and flooding meeting

The same evening, Miami District 2 Commissioner Damian Pardo holds a community meeting at Miami City Hall, 3500 Pan American Drive, from 6 to 8 p.m. The agenda covers zoning, flooding, tree canopy, permits and the state's Live Local Act, according to the Coconut Grove Spotlight. Residents can call 305-250-5333 with questions.

Pardo pushed to keep commission meetings at the historic Dinner Key building. "Done and done, not moving, we are here," he said on Sept. 10, after the commission voted 4-1 to stay put. The Sept. 30 meeting gives Grove and Key Biscayne neighbors a chance to raise concerns directly.

One Design and Biscayne Bay Yacht Racing Association (BBYRA) boats race Saturday. Performance Handicap Racing Fleet (PHRF) boats take the bay Sunday.
